Summary
Chapter 1
As we know assessment includes planning, development, administration, analysis, feedback, and reflection.
The six major steps in the assessment process are:
1. planning
2. development
3. administration
4. analysis
5. feedback
6. reflection
In order to choose the right type of assessment you need to be aware why you are assessing, the abilities and purposes to measure. Think about the skills to assess and the best way to obtain valuable and better results.
TLU (target language use domain) are "tasks that the test taker is likely to encounter outside of the test itself, and to which we want our inferences about language ability to generalize". We need our assessment to reflect tasks that are realistic and authentic for students.
Benefit from contributions and feedback from our colleagues. Review new items and guidelines for alternative assessment.
Specifications
A specification is a detailed description of exactly what is being assessed and how it is being done. Some simple examples are:
- a general description of the assessment
- a list of skills to be tested
- the techniques to assess those skills(formats, types of prompts for each task, timing)
- the expected level of performance and grading criteria.
It is very important to prepare an answer key and scoring system. Also pilot the test with a similar group, or colleagues. Make necessary adjustments, check resources, and double check items, sections and pages before re-producing.
Assessment gives us an opportunity to take a big step and rethink our English program's aims and needs of our current students. English as an international language means to focus on clear communication in a global context. Assessment is an useful tool to achieve this purpose.
