I want to learn |
As an english teacher I face the need to assess and evaluate my students in a way that benefits all.
Assessment is much more than just a test. We need to collect information for evaluation purposes. Assessment includes a broad range of activities and tasks that teachers use to evaluate student achievement, progress and growth on a daily basis.
Some examples are: self- assessment, questionnairies, interviews, observation, and portfolios.
Evaluation vrs Assessment
Evaluation includes the whole course or program, the information is received from many sources.
Assessment is about the learner ability, his or her achievements, testing is a part assessment.
It is important to mention the different types of test based on objectives or purpose:
1. Placement test: language ability to be placed in an appropriate course or class.
2. Aptitude: It measures capacity or general ability to learn a language.
3. Diagnostic: to identify areas in which a student needs further help.
4. Progress test: measure the progress at different stages.
5. Achievemet: determine what a student had learned, usually cumulative.
6. Proficiency tests: assess overall language ability at various levels.
There are nine guiding principles for good test design, development and analysis that every teacher should be aware: usefulness, validity, reliability, practicality, washback, authenticity, transparency, and security.
Finally, I will say that we need to test what we teach and how we teach, analyze and get feedback to improve our tests in order to achieve better results from our students.
